I became a mentor to Julia Doucet earlier this year. A long-time volunteer for various organizations, my experiences with Educate Tomorrow and as Julia’s mentor have been the most rewarding by far. Both Julia and I access a wealth of resources that are enabling Julia to become increasingly independent, supported, and headed on a successful life path. For me, watching Julia learn and grow provides regular moments of joy. I feel pride with each new accomplishment-whether Julia received a 100% on a school exam, demonstrated maturity in a challenging moment, was selected for a competitive independent housing program, or earned an invite on a trip to Haiti to, in her words, “give back to others.” Watching Julia gain confidence, clarity, self-esteem, and trust in myself and others is warming. Seeing her big smile as things continue to move in a positive direction makes my time and commitment as her mentor the most worthwhile type of investment.
